#028 | 4 Powerful Tips to Overcome Scarcity and Embrace Growth
May 06, 2023
Your mind is a powerful thing. The stories you tell yourself and the things you believe about yourself can either prevent change from happening or allow new skills to blossom. So, I’m going to share with you 4 powerful tips to overcome scarcity and embrace growth.
Growth vs Fixed Mindset
You may be wondering: What exactly is a growth mindset? And can it actually help you succeed?
We talk about a “growth mindset” in opposition to a “scarcity/fixed mindset”. Let’s take a look at the differences (image)
In a fixed mindset, people believe in their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talents, are just fixed traits. They have a certain amount and that's that, and then their goal becomes to look smart all the time and never look dumb.
In a growth mindset, people understand that their talents and abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching and persistence. They don't necessarily think everyone's the same or anyone can be Einstein, but they believe everyone can get smarter if they work at it.
The benefits of a growth mindset might seem obvious, but most of us are guilty of having a fixed mindset in certain situations. That can be dangerous because a fixed mindset can often prevent important skill development and growth, which could sabotage your health and happiness down the line.
In other words, your actions change your beliefs which influence your actions.
4 Simple Steps to Transition from Scarcity to Growth Mindset
There are many reasons why it can be hard to stick to good habits or develop new skills. But more often than not, the biggest challenge. Your mind is a powerful thing, and you need to train it.
- Do not underestimate the power of words.
For example, replace the word “failing” by the word “learning”. It will encourage and force you to adapt and improve on a constantly, recurring basis.
What you believe is what you receive.
- Train your mind to recognize the possibilities
An abundance mindset allows you to see more in your life: more options, more choices, and more resources. A Harvard study found that when we focus on one particular thing very attentively, other possibilities that are right in front of us can go completely unnoticed.
The brain can only absorb so much, so if your belief is “I can’t do it” or “it’s impossible” then any other thoughts contradicting it will fall off. Start training your mind to let out its focus, it will give it more room to create an expanded awareness.
Ask yourself if you had all the time and money in the world and you knew you couldn’t fail, what would you be doing? This question may sound cliché but it will help to open your mind up to what’s possible.
- Acknowledge and embrace your imperfections.
Accepting yourself and acknowledging your weaknesses is definitely not easy!
From the day I decided to embrace my imperfections, life got easier for me. I am no more afraid of revealing my true-self to anybody; because I have become better while travelling through those imperfections!
My talents were dominated by my fears and weaknesses. Then I shifted my focus and started questioning “What does perfection mean anyway?” I became more realistic and gentle with myself and came up with the conclusion that we are perfectly imperfect.
Think about it next time your inner self starts kicking in.
- Stop seeking approval.
When you prioritize approval over learning, you limit your own potential for growth.
Next time someone voices an opinion that contradicts your own, don't play low. Voice your thoughts and see what happens. At worst, you'll weaken a bond that wasn't authentic. At best, you'll find that you can disagree with someone and still be loved. This is the way to build genuine relationships. Not everyone has to like you or to agree with you.
Actually, 10% of all the people you’ll meet in your life won’t like you. You were not meant for everyone and not everyone was meant for you.So take ownership of your choices, your actions, your behaviours and be proud of it.
Remember, you have the power to train your mind to view challenges as opportunities for growth. The choice is yours.
