 How To Get Into Your

#025 | How To Get Into Your "Zone Of Genius"

Apr 15, 2023

In this issue, I'm going to show you how to get into your "zone of genius" and unlock your highest potential.

The 4 Zones You Spend Your Life In

In his book the Big Leap, Gay Hendricks talks about the “genius zone.” There are actually four zones Hendricks talks about:

➡The zone of incompetence: In this zone, you are engaging in something you are simply not good at.

➡The zone of competence: You can get the job done, but no better than the next person.

➡The zone of excellence: In this zone, you are doing something you are very, very good at compared to most other people.

➡The zone of genius: When you’re in your genius zone, you’re taking advantage of your natural talents and doing what you earnestly enjoy. You have what could almost be called an “unfair advantage” over your competition.

Most of us don’t struggle too much with the first two zones.

Where we get into real trouble is when we allow our zone of excellence to get in the way of our zone of genius, our calling.

How To Get Into The "Zone Of Genius" And Unlock Your Highest Potential

Either you want to climb the ladder or launch your own business, all the things that you know won't help you grow if you are top of mind for none of them.

The key is to stay narrowly focused on doing work where you add the most value. This will take some work, but it is very much worth the effort.

Actionable:

➡Identify and then ditch tasks and roles from your zone of incompetence.

➡Identify and then delegate tasks and roles from your zone of competence.

➡Identify and then evaluate tasks and roles in our zone of excellence.

➡Identify and embrace that set of activities we’re uniquely suited for in our zone of genius (refer to your strengths in your SWOT analysis).

⌛ I was spending too much time in my zone of excellence.

I would come across an opportunity and think “I could be good at this.

I could be very good at this,” and then I would invest my time and resources into it.

The thing is, you don’t have to do something just because you’re really good at it.

😕 My problem was not that I was not an expert at anything, but that I was good at too many things.

When you know, you know.

I was paralyzed because I couldn’t choose between good, better, and best.

That’s a good problem to have, but it’s still a problem. I’m sure you can relate.

The antidote is to find your genius zone, the area where you can contribute something that’s truly unique to you.

📍 This is where you STANDOUT.
